Relationship, Retention, Revenue
This is how I envision the ideal messaging sequence when engaging a new user. Asking a user to disable Ad-Block as our first engage is the shortest customer journey to revenue, but it skips the process of identifying what our users current relationship with us is. Are we displaying our engage on a certain style of content, or a certain topic? Are we comfortable asking our users about themselves at this stage? Is it their first time here? If not, how often do they visit our site and engage with our content?
Assuming we know that our visitor isn’t a paying subscriber (or logged-in known user) our first efforts should be to learn as much as we can about then while providing them the opportunities to tell us about themselves. This allows us to better understand what type of efforts we can make to win them over and turn them into repeat visitors. This is the first challenge I see new Publishers facing – the willingness to wait to ask users to turn off Ad-Block and instead focus on the relationship first.
The goal should not be to recover revenue today. The goal should be to create a system that is progressively always recovering revenue.
